The BLS course is intended for in-facility care providers, including nursing staff, care aides, medical or dental professionals, and pre-hospital care providers, such as those in EMS, fire service, rescue teams, sports medicine, lifeguards, and ski patrol.

Upon completion of the training, you will receive a Canadian Red Cross 1-year certification in Basic Life Support:AED, and a 3-year Standard First Aid/CPR/AED certification.
L2.0 FIRST AID INSTRUCTOR COURSE-STEPS 1 - 3
1. Evaluate Skills and Check Prerequisites
Confirm prerequisites are met: you must be 18 years or older, have a valid participant certificate for the program you wish to teach, and successfully complete a skills evaluation.
2. Fundamentals of Instruction
Complete the Fundamentals of Instruction online component (8 hrs*), and a classroom component (14 hrs 30 min) focused on the application of fundamentals.
3. Discipline-Specific Classroom Component
Attend the First Aid & CPR discipline-specific classroom component (14 hrs 30 min), which focuses on the specific skills of that program.
4. Teaching Experience
Complete the Teaching Experience online module (30-45 min*) and a classroom component with the support of a Teaching Experience Supervisor.
5. Certification
An electronic certification will be issued upon completion. Certified Instructors can teach Emergency First Aid, Standard First Aid, Marine Basic First Aid, Emergency Child Care First Aid, Standard Child Care First Aid and CPR courses.

L2.1 FIRST AID INSTRUCTOR RECERT
This course is for current Canadian Red Cross First Aid Instructors who require recertification.

L2.1 FIRST AID INSTRUCTOR TRANSFER (Previous experience as an educator)
Instructor candidates who qualify for this transfer pathway are entering into the Instructor Development Program with previous experience as an educator (elementary or secondary level). They will follow the Instructor Development Program however they will not be required to complete Step 2: Fundamentals of Instruction - Classroom Component. Candidates holding a current Lifesaving Society Lifesaving Instructor or a HIGH FIVE Trainer certification qualify for this pathway.

Attend the First Aid & CPR discipline-specific classroom component (14 hrs 30 min), which focuses on the specific skills of that program.

Complete the Teaching Experience online module (30-45 min*) and a classroom component with the support of a Teaching Experience Supervisor.

L4.1 PROFESSIONAL RESPONDER / WILDERNESS & REMOTE DISCIPLINE SPECIFIC INSTRUCTOR COURSE
This course is designed for candidates who wish to deliver Canadian Red Cross Professional Responder courses or Wilderness & Remote First Aid courses. Course content focuses on instructional techniques, including designing and supporting scenarios, organizing courses, and how to support dynamic, learner-centred classroom environments. Through our Instructor Development Centres, Instructors are supported with state-of-the-art instructional tools to help them customize the learning environment to the various provincial, industry and personal learning needs of the participants.
POTENTIAL CERTIFICATIONS
Certifications are valid for three years. Certification will correspond to the candidate’s completion of the pathway components, and in accordance with the courses they wish to teach. This may include the following:
- Basic Life Support Instructor (certified to teach BLS, AM and OT)
- First Responder Instructor (certified to teach BLS, AM, OT, MAFA, and FR)
- Emergency Medical Responder Instructor (certified to teach BLS, AM, OT, FR, EMR, AFA, and MAFA)
- Remote First Aid Instructor (RFAI) - certified to teach Remote First Aid
- Wilderness First Aid Instructor (WFAI) - certified to teach Remote First Aid and Wilderness First Aid
- Wilderness First Responder Instructor (WFRI) - certified to teach Remote First Aid, Wilderness First Aid, Wilderness First Responder, Oxygen Therapy, Airway Management, Basic Life Support and First Responder
PREREQUISITES
Must be 18 years of age
Have completed the Canadian Red Cross Fundamentals of Instruction.
Proof of participant-level certification in the discipline-specific course that candidate is desiring certification. For example, BLSI candidates require a BLS, AM and OT certification; FRI candidates require a FR certification, EMRI candidates require an EMR certification; RFAI candidates require a RFA certification; WFAI candidates require a WFA certification, WFRI candidates require a WFR certification.
